Kaohsiung Museum of History/高雄市立歴史博物館

先週の水曜日、用事が有って高雄に行って来た。用事が終わったら、ちょっと観光もして来た。

I had to run an errand in Kaohsiung last Wednesday, and after I finished, I checked out the city a bit as well.

上個禮拜，我有事，去高雄。事做完了，再觀光了一下。

台湾にこう言うフォー西洋風な建物がいっぱい有る。一応ちょっとビクトリア（？）式に成っているけど、何か違う。
This type of building is really popular in Taiwan.  I don't know what to call it.  Faux-Victorian style?  I don't know enough about architecture to nail it down, but these buildings do always strike me as a little off.

高島屋！？

鋼鐵人怎麼吃東西！？假面下，他應該哭著。可是，我們看得就看不到。很可憐！
How does Iron Man eat the food through his mask?  Is that why he is staring at the chicken nugget?  Is he just now realizing that he has no way to eat it?

博物館に見えるけど、これは銀行だ。
This building looks like it could be a museum or something, but it's actually just a fancy-looking bank.
我看到這個建築，我就以為它是博物館，沒想到是銀行！

桜っぽい花。何の花か分からない。
好像櫻花那樣子，可是應該不是。

では、これは博物館だ。高雄市立歴史博物館と言うやつだ。元々は日本時代に建てられた市役所だった。中華民国が台湾を支配してからも、この建物は市政府として１９９２年まで使用されていた。
Now here's an actual museum.  This is the Kaohsiung Museum of History.  It was originally built during the Japanese period, and it served as the government building for Takao (Kaohsiung's former name).  It continued to be the building for the city government after the Chinese Nationalists took over Taiwan up until 1992 when the government moved to a new building.
這是高雄市立博物館。本來是日本時代做的政當局，後來中華民國開始統治臺灣，把這個建築當成高雄市政府。1992年政府遷到新的建築，然後1998年這個變成博物館。

228的時候，在這個建築裡有一個悲慘的屠戮。當時的中華民國政府殺了很多反對的台灣人。博物館的二樓好好地說明那時候的事件。
This building was the site of a major massacre during the 228 event.  A lot of Taiwanese people involved in protesting against the government were killed here, so the museum's second floor is devoted to telling the history behind the 228 incident as it occurred in Kaohsiung.

この建物は２２８の時に、ヒドい虐待がここに有った。中華民国政府によって沢山のデモしている台湾人は殺された。博物館に２２８事件の展示が二階を占めている。

博物館の中の台湾地図だ。結構古いと思う。鉄道はまだ島を一周していない時代だった。
This old tourist map in the museum appears to be from long enough ago that they still hadn't finished connecting the east coast railway with the rest of island's railways.
注意看，就看得到鐵路還沒有臺灣一周。

在臺灣的日本時代政府建的建築都是很厲害。當時日本政府想讓台灣人尊敬日本，所以努力建像高雄政當局這樣的建築。

I've heard it argued that the Japanese government built impressive buildings like this in their Taiwan colony in order to impress the local populace with the government's power and wealth--thereby legitimizing their rule amongst local people--and to show off to the rest of the world how much Japan was investing in Taiwan--thereby legitimizing their rule over Taiwan on the international scene.

建物の中は本当に豪華だ。日本時代に出来た政府の建物はだいたいこう言う感じだ。日本政府は台湾人に日本帝国の凄さを見せたかったわけでもあって、外国人に日本統治が台湾にどんなにいいかとアピールしたかったわけでもあった。

暗かったから、写真がモヤッとする。でも時計はぴかぴかするから、フラッシュを使ってみて、反射がヒドかった。
I couldn't get a better picture of this clock because it was too dim, and if I used my flash the reflection from the polished marble made the photo look even worse than this.

我覺得這個博物館的外面真的很漂亮。這個綠色好像變綠色的銅。

この色本当に好きだ。初めてこの色の政府建築を見た。自由の女神みたいなずっと外に置いてある銅に見える。
I love the green they chose for this building.  It reminds me of weathered copper.

真ん中の家はちょっと日本っぽい。でも一階の前に有るコラムは全然それに合っていない。
The second floor of the middle building looks kind of Japanese in style, but the columns on the first floor look like they were taken from a different building.

物凄く残念な事に、この後昔高雄に有ったイギリスの大使館長の住居に行ったのに、カメラの電池は充電が無く成ったので、全く写真が無い。めっちゃ綺麗なのに、、、冏
I actually kept sightseeing after this, and I went to the Former British Consulate in Takao.  It's a beautiful, red-brick building on a cliff on the seaside, and I really wanted to get some nice photos of it, but my camera ran out of batteries just as I got there.  Worst.  Timing.  Ever.
後來我去打狗英國領事館，可是我相機沒有充電了！太可惜！我是世界上最倒楣的人。囧（打狗英國領事館真的很漂亮。大家應該去看看！）

昨日用事が有って、高雄に行って来た。地下鉄の「市議会」駅で降りて、エスカレータに乗ったら、この面白い風景を目にした。日陰が踊っている様に見える。この時間帯じゃなかったら多分見れなかったと思う。
I took this video yesterday when I had to go to Kaohsiung to take care of some errands.  As I was getting out at the (Former) City Council Station, I noticed this happy shadow dance on the escalator.  Pretty cool, huh?  If I hadn't been getting out of the station at just this time, the angle would have been all wrong and I wouldn't have seen this.
我昨天有事去高雄。出市議會站去的時候，我看到這個風景。電扶梯移動讓看起來影子在跳舞。有意思吧？

Dogs and Badlands/犬と荒れ地/小狗和惡地

この写真は二ヶ月前撮ったのだけど、なかなか載せるのが出来なかった。台南の近くにこの荒れ地の地帯が有る。

Here are some pictures from the Badlands area to the east of Tainan.  I went there a couple of months back, but I forgot to put up the photos until now.

差不多兩個月以前我去了惡地。最近我蠻忙，所以到了今天沒把這些照片po。

 雨の多い台湾みたいな熱帯気候には荒れ地はあまり無いらしい。ここは土質が元々良くないからこう成っていると聞いた。（熱帯太陽も関係している。日光が強くて、地面がかなり熱く成るので、基本的に山の南側の方が荒れている。）
The explanation I heard as to why the area is like this is that the soil is bad to begin with, so it's hard for plants to grow.  Also, because the sun is really strong in Taiwan, the south-facing sides of the mountains heat up a lot from the sunlight and that makes it even harder for anything to grow.  This type of landscape is pretty unusual outside of a drier climate like you find in the western US.  Taiwan gets a lot of rain, so I really wouldn't expect to see anything like this.

 この日、行き先はレストランだった。景色が凄いだけじゃなくて、犬も沢山居る。

 不但風景也很漂亮，還有，喜歡小狗的人，來這裡就開心了。
There's a restaurant up top here with excellent views and lots of dogs.

 來這裡我就認為臺灣真的有很多地形，氣候。沒想到在雨下得多的臺灣也有這樣的地形。

台湾は本当に地形とか気候とかはバリエーションが豊富だ。こんな所まで有るなんてびっくりした！
Taiwan may be a small island, but the tall mountains and active crust here ensure no shortage of variation in climate and landscape!

Southward, to Pingtung!/南へ！屏東へ！

何週間前、屏東（ピンドング）に行って来た。ポストするのをやっと今日思い出した。

行った場所は、客家文化博物館と屏東科技大学だった。大学には怪我した動物や、人間に育てられて、そして捨てられた野生動物などの世話をする施設が有る。また、熱帯果物研究センターも有る。この旅行は中学校の見学旅行みたいな感じだったけど、優しい先生の知り合いがこの間出来たから、私も皆と一緒に行かせて頂いた。

I went to Pingdong a couple of weeks back, but I totally forgot to post about it.  I had the chance to go thanks to a teacher I met who was taking her class on a school trip down there to see the Hakka Cultural Center and the Pingdong Technical University.  The university was a stop on the trip because they have an animal rescue center and a tropical fruits research center.

我兩，三禮拜以前去屏東。可是今天我剛剛想起來把照片發貼。我去了客家文物館和屏東科技大學。在大學裡面，也有熱帶水果研究中心，也有把悲傷的動物救援的中心。

客家博物館の入り口だ。前のポストで書いたけど、客家とは、中華系とされている民族の事だ。中華系の中には自分達の文化と言語が有るから、他の中華系の人達とちょっと独立している。台湾の中華系の人は殆ど客家系か閩南系に成っている。（でも閩南系の方が圧倒的に多い。）
The dragon above is from the entrance to the Hakka museum.  The Hakka, like I think I mentioned in an earlier post, are usually considered a sub-group of the Han ethnic group (Han being the majority ethnicity in China.)  They're one of the two major groups of Chinese who settled in Taiwan, but they're the smaller of those two groups, with the Hoklo people making up a much larger portion of Taiwan's population.

これは確かに客家の伝統的な家に関する展示物だったけど、詳しい事は忘れた。
我忘了，但是我覺得應該這個展品跟客家傳統的家有關係。

なぜか、プールが有った。
There was a pool for some reason.

以下的照片是煙草。那張以下的照片是採了以後，以前把煙葉弄乾乾的房屋。在這裡工作的人都住在房屋的二樓，在一樓工作了。

ここは博物館の一番面白い所だった。昔の煙草農業などについての展示が有った。上の写真は煙草だ。下の写真は昔使われた煙草を乾燥させる為の建物だ。
The plants above are tobacco, which used to be grown in great quantities in this area.  The house below is an old drying house.  The people who worked there lived on the second floor so that they could work in shifts and dry the leaves 24 hours a day.  I can only imagine that living in a house with constant fires going in tropical Taiwan must have been really fun.

客家博物館を出た時には、疲れたウォリーを見付けた。後尻尾しか出していない犬と魔法使いを探せばね。
I found Waldo!  He looks pretty beat though.

バスにもう一回乗って屏東科技大学に向かって行った。途中で屏東の熱帯風景の写真を沢山撮った。

I took a bunch of photos of the scenery from the bus just because it looks very different from the Tainan area.  The roads were so straight!

台南の混んでいる昔ながらの町並みと全然違う雰囲気だ。

中国語の「ヒッチハイク」の漢字は面白い。「便利な／都合のいい車に乗る」みたいな意味に成っている。
This hitchhike sign was at the entrance to the extremely spacious campus of the Pingdong Technical University.  Seriously, the campus is pretty huge.

ここからは救われた動物を見たけど、残念な事に写真撮るの禁止されているので、全く写真が無い。本来は動物園じゃないからね。許可を貰ってから見学出来る所だ。

動物を見てから、熱帯果物研究センターに行ってみた。どの言葉にしても名前が全く分からない、馴染みの無い果物ばかり有った。

I don't have any photos from the animal rescue center since they asked us not to take photos.  It's not a zoo after all.  It's primary goal is to take care of injured and sick animals.  They do give educational tours though for groups like ours.  I have lots of photos of weird fruits that I've never seen before though.  The tropical fruit research center reminded me of how much I don't know about tropical fruits outside of the few that are popular import items in the US, like bananas.  I had know idea what I was looking at most of the time.

因為照片禁止，所以我沒有動物的照片。本來，我們去的地方不是動物園。是救悲傷的動物的地方。有許可才可以進去。但是我有很多水果的照片。

我喜歡以下的三張照片。我覺得他們就看起來臺灣的普通的風景。有“啊彌陀佛”的看板，也有摩托車，也有檳榔樹。

I took the photos below to get the shrine and "Namu Amida Buddha" sign (the yellow one) together.  You see these Namu Amida Buddha signs all over Taiwan and Japan, though I'd say that I see way more of them in Taiwan.  (Actually, the way I wrote it out, "Namu Amida", is the Japanese pronunciation.  I guess Chinese is "Namo Amituo Buddha".)

バスに乗った時、この道沿い神社と檳榔木の写真を撮った。そして、もう一回撮ろうとしたら、おばあちゃんが入ってきて、最高に台湾らしい写真に成った。
I tried for another shot of the picture above and got this one with the old lady dragging a truck behind her.  Nice!

もう一回撮ってみた（下の）。バイクが入っていて、檳榔木がはっきり見えるから、こっちの方が台湾らしいかな？上か下かどっちか分からないけど、ピーク台湾に成っていると思う。
Then on my third try, I achieved peak Taiwan.  We have here in one photo: Betel Nut trees, a Namo Amituo Buddha sign, a roadside shrine, and a motor scooter.  Excellent!

I took a bunch of photos on the way home and got some different scenes as we passed by rice fields, vegetable (?) fields, rivers, and a as we went over a big bridge.

Looks Like Fall

I saw these trees and their red flowers the other day, and the flowers scattered on the ground made it look like autumn for a moment.
赤い花が地面に落ちている風景はなんと秋らしいのだ。台南には紅葉が無いけどね。
