Ou Island: Island Full of Cats/

On Friday, after having arrived in Okinawa on Thursday, we drove around the southern part of the island, mostly in Nanjo City.  However, these first three photos are from Senaga Island, which is just south of Naha Airport.

An American Fire Fighting base near Naha airport.  The airport is used for civilian planes, Japanese self-defense force planes, and US military planes.

We stayed in Yaese, a "town" in southern Okinawa wedged in between Nanjo City and Itoman City.  I put town in quotes because towns and cities in Japan are legal definitions, and towns are not necessarily much smaller than cities.  In fact, there are some towns that are bigger than cities.  The place we stayed is a small inn called Yuien.  The owner was really nice, and he was interested to hear that we live in Taiwan since he's really into surfing and spoke fondly of Taiwan's east coast.

A Shisa statue on the roof.

The first place we went was Ou Island, an island just off the south coast of Okinawa, connected to the main island by a bridge.  We went there because the owner of the inn we stayed at recommended the Tempura there.  We arrived to discover that the island had been taken over by cats.

Ryukyu Cola

Cats everywhere!

Harley boats.  Harley is dragon boat racing, similar to what they do in China.  It was introduced to Okinawa hundreds of years back, before there was even a Ryukyu kingdom uniting the island, and it remains popular to this day, especially in southern Okinawa, which has traditionally been the base of Okinawa's fishing fleets.  I spell it "Harley" because the pronunciation is kind of similar, but it has nothing to do with Harley Davidson.  (A more standard romanization of the name would probably be "Haarii".)

A monument to some American navy squadron.  They appear to have been based in Okinawa back in the day.

More cats!

Okinawa Trip 2013/

I went to Okinawa!  Again!  I've been there, what, 6 times or so by now, but whatever, I love the place.
In Taoyuan Airport in Taipei I saw this sticker for Palau Airways.  The entire country of Palau has just a couple 10 thousand people, so I was surprised to find out that they even have an airline.

Drivers for the Naha (the biggest city in Okinawa) City monorail.  Their uniforms are really cute.

Guys cleaning windows.  I've never seen a big group of them doing it all at once like this before.

Why is there Manischewitz in Okinawa?  There can't be more than like, 3 Jewish people there.  Is there any reason to drink Manischewitz if you're not Jewish?  I was always led to believe that it is foul, sweet, nasty stuff.  (Though I'll admit that I've never actually drunk it.)  On the other hand, it is placed next to "Blueberry Wine" and "Akadama" wine (an old brand in Japan that is sickly sweet and only enjoyed by old people who remember when that was the only wine you could get in Japan) so maybe Manischewitz has found a target consumer amongst people who drink sweet, disgusting wines like Akadama.
Near the Himeyuri Peace Museum they have this light tower.  The Himeyuri Peace Museum is named after a group of female students and teachers who were mobilized by the Japanese government during WWII.  Most of them were killed in the American invasion of Okinawa.

Afterwards, we went to a nearby, local light show.

Itoman has always been a port town.  Going way back, and even in the present, people in Itoman went far off into the ocean in their boats to fish.

They might have caught fish like this!

 And encountered sharks like this!

 Fairground rides
That's it for the first day.  (It was only half a day really anyway.)  I have a lot more photos to come!
