Jooquayjoo Mansion /

There is an amazing abandoned mansion in Taichung called Jooquayjoo (聚奎居).  Copy and paste those Chinese characters and do a Google image search.  You'll quickly see that it's quite well known.  And because of how beautiful it is, it's a popular site for photographers to use.  (Actually, since there are many photographers out there way better than I am, once you've done a Google search for this place, you may just decide to check out their blogs and forget mine.)

I drove out to see the mansion from Taichung.  First, here's the beautiful Taichung train station.

The mansion is not far from central Taichung, which is probably another reason why it's so well known.  It took me less than half an hour of driving to get there.

I did a (very brief) search online, and it looks like this place was built in 1920 by someone named Chun Shou-dzong (陳紹宗).  My thorough research has brought me to the conclusion that he must have been very rich, though I will admit to not having yet published a peer-reviewed article on this yet.

The place has been abandoned for a couple of decades, probably since the late 1950's.  It's been designated officially as a historic building, but the owners apparently haven't gotten behind any plan to preserve the place, so it's slowly falling apart.  While this is unfortunate, on the other hand because it's abandoned, you can freely walk right onto the grounds, though it is technically still private property and you're not actually supposed to.

The shape of the house--three closed sides and one open side with a courtyard--is traditional southern Fujianese architecture.  (Most Taiwanese people have southern Fujianese ancestry, so Taiwan is littered with this kind of three-walled houses.)  However, the decoration is all European-influenced Baroque.

It is actually a little dangerous wandering around in here.  You have been warned.

Like I said, this ruin is very well known in Taiwan.  Here is a couple come do to their wedding photographs.  (It's a thing in Taiwan, and in the Han diaspora in general.  You take fancy photos of the lovely couple in some exotic, beautiful location before the wedding happens.  You can't go anywhere beautiful in Taiwan without potentially running into a couple in wedding clothes having photos taken of themselves.)

Ok, so now we have two separate couples here for wedding photographs.

I've never been to an abandoned mansion in Taiwan that was so busy as this before.  Aside from the two wedding groups and the one tourist you can see on the left side, there were also at least six other people poking around who aren't on camera here.

Pretty cool, right?  You can see why it's so popular.
