Changhua Roundhouse /

Here are some photos from Changhua (彰化) City's old roundhouse.  This roundhouse is a Japanese-period structure that is still in use today.  Amazingly enough, despite being an active roundhouse, it's also open to tourists during the day!

This is one of the coolest places I've been to in Taiwan, and the weather was gorgeous, so I thought I was going to have a lot to say.  But now that it comes time to write, I'm finding I don't have much to say except that you should definitely go here and check it out.  Even if you're not super into trains it's still pretty cool.

We walk around the outer side...

...and bump into our first engines!

Dangerous stuff

Someone's laundry

And here's the turntable!  I'm hearing the Thomas the Tank Engine theme in my head as I type this.

There are a couple of old steam trains here too!

The numbers on the roof are really stylish.

The train in the back is actually traveling.  Like I said, this is an active roundhouse, so it's connected to the rails nearby.  The security measures were pretty laughable to.  There was basically just one old guy sitting in a folding chair who would get up occasionally and warn some tourists that they were straying to close to the active rails.

I'd never realized before, but the turntable itself has a rail too.

A Japanese-era relic behind the basketball court.

So be on your best behavior.

As I walked out, this temple procession went by.

Japanese-era houses, probably built as dorms for the railway workers.

There's all sorts of neat, old structures in this area.

The wall appears to have just fallen right off.

I took some photos over a high wall.  I was just holding my camera up and couldn't see what I was doing.

A totally abandoned-looking bar with a brand-new sign.
Wall art

It turned out that the walled compound with the art was a farming association property.

The end!
