Xiju: Qingfan and More/西莒:青帆村など/西莒:青帆村等

Continuing from last time, we're still in Xiju.

After leaving Tianwo, I came across the island's tiny airport.

It's really tiny!

At this point I returned to the largest village on the island near the port where I had arrived.  The village is called Qingfan.  It's also called "Little Hong Kong" because it used to be quite busy with ships coming through on their way to and from Fuzhou.  It's quite overbuilt for being a village on a small island in the middle of the ocean, and it appears even more built up than it actually is because it's all on the side of a hill, with the buildings looking ready to slide into the ocean at any moment.  The village is pretty much totally lacking in any of the charming, traditional architecture that some other villages on Xiju and Dongju have, but its unique appearance makes it worth visiting anyway.

This temple appears much more like the ones you can see on the Formosan mainland than the other temples I saw around Juguang.

The former city hall.

Nearby here is a place called "Mountain Sea One House" (Shanhai Yijia).  I really wanted to see it because apparently during the Cold War, the American CIA used it as a base from which to collect information on China.  Unfortunately, it's currently under construction, so I wasn't able to see it at all.

Here's Qingfan seen from above.

At the bottom of the town is this huge gate.

...and a huge temple

The big temple has a traditional Mindong "Fire-Stopping" gables.

I started to climb back up through the town's narrow alleys.  What a strange, crowded place, especially considering that it's on a remote, sparsely inhabited island.  You'd think everyone would spread out a bit more!

A temple with yellow gables.

A spring comes out of the mountain here.

The spring has been covered up by this little shed.

A real fixer-upper

I left Qingfan and headed towards the island's interior.  I saw these small islands in the distance.

In the mountains in the middle of the island was this abandoned military base.

Inside this building is...

...some weird stuff.

Lastly, I headed to the island's west coast.  The cliffs here are truly amazing.

The roads on this island are quite steep and you need a good set of brakes.  I don't think any amount of braking will help with a grade this steep though...

One last former base to check out.

After this I got on a boat and headed back to Dongju.  The winds had gotten strong and the waves were already pretty big.  What did the weather have in store for us?  Check out the next post to find out!
