Kaohsiung Port Station/

Last weekend I went to Kaohsiung and visited the old port area across the water from Cijin Island.  I've been here before, but I wanted to visit some places that I hadn't been yet.  One place I went to was the Takao Railway Museum in the Kaohsiung Port Station.  This station was, I believe, the original Takao (Kaohsiung) station, and when the current Kaohsiung Station was built, it was renamed the Kaohsiung Port Station.  It used to play a big role in freight shipping since it connected the Kaohsiung port with the Taiwanese railway system.  The station is no longer in use as a station, but it has been transformed into a (free!) museum.

In the first photo we can see the one of the entrances to Siziwan station (part of the Kaohsiung subway system) on the right.  To the left is the museum.

The building's roof immediately gives it away as a Japanese-era building.

They have all sorts of stuff on display inside from back in the pre-computer days.  The books below are collections of "railway bulletins" though I'm unsure of what their contents are exactly.
"Hamasen" means "Beach Line" in Japanese.  The railway originally came down to this station and stopped, but after they built the current Kaohsiung station and made the railway extend south and east to Pingtung, the line to this station became a small branch line.

Old time tables

A stamp machine, for tickets I guess?

Boxes for sorting things, labeled in Chinese.

Out behind the station is a big open area that has a lot of tracks, and appears to have been a storage yard for trains back in the day.  They have a couple trains on display, but must of the former track yard is now a park.  There was a concert there on the day I visited.

The track switches are still in place.

"Safety First"

Gundam?
"No mater what, soldiers riding the freight train is strictly prohibited".   Soldiers train-hopping must have been a big problem back in the day in Taiwan.  (I guess?)

There was also a bus on display.

...a bus that appears to have taken some bullets to the windshield.

Steam trains just had tubes and stuff all over, didn't they?

This open area actually has to be one of the bigger parks in Kaohsiung I figure.  It seems to be popular for kite-flying, for obvious reasons.

TRAIN ART
If you follow the tracks off in this direction, eventually they merge with the rest of the train system.  (Or they did, at any rate.  They may be cut off now since this part of the line isn't in use any longer.)

They had an enlarged comic about Kaohsiung history on the side of the museum.

The end for now.  More next time.

Chiayi Milk and Ceramics/

I went on a group, bus trip recently up to some places in Chiayi.  Chiayi is a city and county north of Tainan.  We went to one place that is a sort of tourist dairy farm, and another place where we saw traditional ceramics of the type used on Taoist temples.  Unfortunately, I did the thing I usually do on group trips, which is not pay attention to where I am at all, so I don't remember the names of the places I went, nor do I have any particularly insightful information to share with you.  Enjoy!

Look at the veins on this cow's udder.

We had a chance to try milking cows.  I passed because I find large animals terrifying, and warm, bodily secretions are gross, so thinking too much about the fact that that's what milk is might make me unable to enjoy dairy products ever again.

There was a chance to feed calves too.

The farm also practices genetic experimentation.  This is one of their dog-cows.

Now here are some photos from the ceramics place.

This bus was parked out front.  I thought the company's name was cute.

A recycling bin
I really liked all the animal ceramics here.  Check out these fish and birds.

There is this group of 8 gods who are always pictured together in Taoist temples.  Here they've been made into a band.

Yeah!  Rocking out!

The instrument I play is related to the Chinese one in the middle here.  This Chinese instrument is called a "sanxian".

Random Kaohsiung Collection/

Random photos from Kaohsiung.  First, a collection of railway signs next to the main station.

Some house.  I liked the tiles.

Central Park subway station.  My camera didn't quite capture the effect of the sunlight pouring in from above as well as I would have liked.
