A Geographic Extreme and a Strange Castle/最北端と変なお城/北疆和奇怪的古堡

還是在東引。我拜訪了這座酒廠。我在福爾摩沙島不常看到這牌子。試飲看看就覺得不錯。跟別的高粱比起來比較沒有那麼強烈的酒味。

More photos of Dongyin.  Below is a factory I visited where they make "gaoliang".  Gaoliang is a distilled liquor made from sorghum.  Gaoliang is, to be honest, rather fierce tasting, and it's something of an acquired taste I'd say.  I tried a tasting of the gaoliang this company makes though, and I thought it was easier to drink than other brands I've had up until now.

まだ東引島のことを紹介し続ける。ここは「高梁」（こうりょう、中国語は発音が「ガオリャン」に近い）という麦類でできた酒の工場だ。高粱は金門と馬祖ではよく育てられている。（両方とも環境が厳しくて他の作物はよくできないことがその由来だと聞いたことがある。）高粱は酒の名前にもなって、台湾を代表する酒になるだろう。正直、味はちょっとキツくて、嫌いな人も珍しくないと思う。でもここで試飲してみたら、この会社のブランドは他よりもうちょっと飲みやすいと思った。

接下來去看這裡：燕秀潮音

The next place I visited was Yanxiu Tidal Echo.  It's called that because the sea water comes in through a small opening and crashes against the cliffs in a small, round enclosure.

次に訪れたのはここ：燕秀潮音（この字を出す為に今「つばめひできしおおと」を打ち込んで、変な感じがした。暗記号みたい。）

有好窄的空間，海水會經過那裡流進來。

This is the crevice through which the water enters.

I'm not giving the camera the finger here--it's my index finger anyway--I'm just making a stupid joke that only makes sense if you can read the Chinese characters.  It's not funny anyway, so I won't bother explaining any more than that.

This place is called "Beihai Tunnel".  It's another tunnel like the Andong one I wrote about in a previous post.  It was closed though.  Oh well.

到了東引的西部，開霽了一點點。

While I was on the west coast of Dongyin, the skies cleared up a bit.

東引の西海岸の崖の上にいた時、ちょっと晴れて来た。

下面照片黑黑的部分就是海現龍闕

The black rocks in the photo below look like a dragon emerging from the sea supposedly.

岩が黒いところは龍に見えるらしい。

照片中心的島嶼是「中柱島」。原本東引和西引是兩座島，中柱島在兩座中間。現在有堤防，東引，中柱，西引三座都在聯通。

In between Dongyin and Xiyin, there's one more small island called "Zhongzhu".  The three islands are currently connected by a dike with a road built on top of it.

東引と西引の間に「中柱島」という小さな島がある。何年前堤防が造られて、東引と西引は現在中柱島を通って繋がっている。

在中柱島上，有這座城堡。

This is Zhongzhu Island.  They built this strange castle-thing on it.

そした中柱島にはこの変なお城がある。

On top of the castle is a statue of Chiang Kai-shek's son, Chiang Ching-kuo.

日曜日にその辺でくつろいでいるおっさんって感じ。

你看：厚厚的鏡架，裡面鏡片沒有，其實蔣經國是現在台灣時尚的先導。

騎到西引。跟東引比起來西引真的什麼都沒有。島民人口很少，大部分都是軍用地。但是西引有一般人可以去台灣領土北疆。我停車爬行人道去看。

I went to Xiyin next.  Xiyin is much smaller than Dongyin, and there's only one very small group of houses on it.  The island's land is mostly taken up by military bases.  It does, however, contain the country of Taiwan's northernmost point; or at least the point from which you can see the northernmost point.  The actual northernmost point is a tiny island slightly to the north of Xiyin.

西引にも行ってみた。東引と比べて、大分小さくて、島民も少ない。小さな村落が一箇所しかない。それ以外はだいたい軍用地。でもこの島は台湾領土の最北端（が見える）ところがある。ここからバイク降りて歩いて行こう。

「疆」という漢字は「さかい」という意味みたい。

在海上一座小島看得到吧？應該那座就是真的北疆。叫做「北固礁」。

You can see the small island behind the stone marker.  It's called "Beigujiao".

実際の最北端は沖に見えるあの小島。「北固礁」という。

接下來我去西引西端看三山據點。看那邊的看板，好像跟別的據點一樣，原本的名字是數子。因為是「33據點」所以後來給一般人開放時候，就改名「三山據點」。

On the west side of Xiyin, at the end of a long cape, there's a base that's been turned into a sort of tourist attraction.  It's called "Sanshanjudian", or, to be realistic given the accent most Taiwanese people have "Sansanjudian" .  "Sansan" is the same pronunciation as "33" which was the base's number originally.

西引の西側にある岬に「三山拠点」（拠点は基地や要塞や砦などという意味）がある。元々は「33拠点」だった。発音が似ているから、観光地にされた時は「三山」に改名された。

我還不知道這個符號說什麼意思。

I couldn't figure out what these marks were supposed to mean.

このマークの意味が分からない。

為什麼在離島看到這樣平常在城市裡生息的鴿子？是有人養的嗎？

I'm on a sparsely-populated island far removed from any other land, and what do I see?  A pigeon just like the ones that plague New York City where I'm from.  Did it follow me here?  Is someone keeping tabs on me?

大きな町から遠く離れた離島になんでこんな都会に棲みそうな鳩がいた？人が飼っているかなと思った。（台湾では鳩を養って競争させるらしい。）

下次我要把西引的照片貼完了。雖然我待在期間只有一天而已可是東西引很好玩，所以後來我要介紹這麼多！兩座「引」很有引誘力！

I was only in Dongyin/Xiyin for one day, but you can see just how many photos I took!  They're great islands, and I hope to go back again some time.  I still have a couple more photos from Xiyin that I'll post next time.
