After arriving in Ehime, the very next day we went on a trip to Miyajima in Hiroshima. To get there we had to drive across a bridge from Ehime to Hiroshima. These first photos are from a rest area on the way.
We also stopped for food along the way. Here are a couple of photos from the town we stopped in.
And here's where the ferry leaves for Miyajima!
If you've ever seen a photo of Miyajima, you probably saw this gate. It's the most famous place on the island.
When the tide comes in, the gate is partly submerged into the water. No, it's not bad planning on the part of the builders, it was done intentionally.
Behind the gate (inland) is a Shinto Shrine. The tide waters actually go all the way up to the shrine. During high tide if you walk around in the shrine on its elevated walkways, it's like you're walking on the ocean's surface.
And now we know where Chevrolet got its logo from! (The gate viewed from underneath.)
In front of a nearby Buddhist temple was this amazing tree. Its trunk is split into nine parts at the base, but its all one tree!
Here you can see where a space has been dug out to keep some water below the shrine at all times. If this were high tide, all of that mud would be water.
The plum blossoms were just starting to bloom.
