Northern Manhattan: Hamilton's House / マンハッタン北部：ハミルトン邸 / 曼哈頓北部：漢密爾頓府

今天也是曼哈頓北部的照片。第一張是125街站。看得到哥大的新校區。（還是在施工中。）

Some more photos from northern Manhattan.  Today we start with one taken from the 125th St. station on the 1 line.  I showed this in an earlier post, but Columbia is building a big, new campus just north of 125th.

今日もマンハッタンの北部を散策しよう。まずは125街の駅から前も紹介したコロンビア大学の新しいキャンパス工事の写真から始めよう。

79th and Broadway.  Why did I take this?  I don't remember.

The faded lettering on the street looks like some sort of barcode when looked at from the side.

たしか「校区」と書いているだろうが、横から文字の写真を撮ったら、バーコードみたいな感じになるのは面白いと思った。

最近這裡的大樓被拆除了。旁邊的大樓上看得到鄰樓的痕跡。雖然我好萬幾次有經過這裡前面可是我已經忘記了以前有什麼大樓。每次回家看到這樣的情況就覺得很寂漠。我感覺到我認識的紐約越來越不見了。

There used to be a building here.  It was knocked down and now we can see the exposed side of the building next to it.  I can't even remember when used to be here, even though I probably passed by a thousand times.

最近までここに建物があった。横の建物にその跡が見える。何千回もここ通ったことがあるはずなのに、何があったかさっぱり忘れている。こういうのがあるからこそニューヨークに帰る度に、寂しく感じる。

我在拍這個上面有油的水窪時，也等公車的小朋友問我「為什麼有油？」我告訴他「應該是有的人灑的吧」。我說時候想出來一個社會害蟲的人，都不管他害社會的麻煩。但是小朋友聽我說，就說「啊，不小心地灑了吧。」他的想法比我樂觀多了，讓我放心一下。當然結果是一樣的，有環境污染，但要看你怎麼看別人你的想法會改變。如你決心大家因為不好所以做壞事，人生就很辛苦。如你認為人有時不小心或是不注意到事情，不要那麼生氣。

I was taking a photo of this puddle with an oil-slick on it, and a small boy waiting for the bus at the same stop as me asked me why there was oil in the puddle.  I told him that I supposed that it had spilled from somewhere.  His reply was "Oh, so maybe someone dropped it by mistake."  I had been imagining some jerk who was too careless to take proper care of his messes (and in truth, that probably is what the situation is) but I liked the boy's interpretation.  It's a lot more pleasant and stress-free to think that it's all just an honest mistake.  Someone just dropped some oil!  Oops!  Maybe we can all feel that way when (not if) Shell or whoever spills in the arctic.  Oops!

油が乗っている水溜り。写真を撮った時、隣にいた小さな男の子は「なんで油あるの？」と聞いて、私は「誰かがここに溢したからだろう」と答えた。それを聞いたら、男の子は「ああ、間違って落としたのね」と解説した。私は溢した人を想像した時、不注意ばかりして、社会に迷惑かけっぱなしの野郎を想像したから、純粋に「間違い」と受け取ったところが斬新だった。子供優しいね。

125街站。太陽在很低的位置，讓等電車的人都看起來比較漂亮。

The 125th St. station again.  This was late enough in the evening that the sun was coming in at a low angle, and all the tired commuters going home suddenly looked a lot more beautiful.

暮れている太陽の光を浴びる通勤族。普通にいらいらしながら電車を待っているだけだけど、こんな光を浴びたら、皆んな綺麗に見える。

我在城市看別人常常想知道他們要去哪裡，要做什麼，在想什麼。尤其這樣的日光很漂亮所以讓我很好好氣地看他們。

When you see people in this light, it looks like they are in the middle of an adventure, and that adventure is life.  In other lighting, they just look like people waiting for the darn train--why is it late again!?--to come.

縞模様シャツの男性はどこに向かっているのだろう？ネクタイさんはこれから何をするんだろう？普段気にしない周りの人間をこの綺麗な光で見たら、新しく見えてきて、かれらの人生をもっと知りたくなる。

飛機過走了！

A plane!

飛行機！

電車到了，我就走了。我再也不會碰到這些人。永遠不知道他們去哪裡，做什麼，在想什麼。

And then the train comes and I never get to find out how the adventure of the guy in the striped-shirt with the rolling baggage ends.

でも電車が来たら、私が乗って行って、二度と縞シャツとネクタイさんに出会わないだろう。

我一看到就以為這隻是一隻很小的烏鴉。但是原來只是鴿子而已。

I thought this was an extraordinarily small crow, but after I took the photo, I realized that it was just a pigeon.

我們到了漢密爾頓的家。這棟房子有兩次搬過！原來在離這裡不遠的地方，後來搬到上面的教會旁邊。最近再搬到現位。（在St. Nicholas Park北部。）漢密爾頓只住在這裡兩年左右。建了兩年後他跟別人決鬥就過世了。

Here is Alexander Hamilton's house.  It's been moved twice.  It's original location was just a couple of blocks from here, and after that it was bought by and moved next to the church in the photos above.  A couple of years back, they lifted it over part of the church building and then moved it to this northern section of St. Nicholas Park.  It's the only house the Hamilton ever owned in his life.  He also only got to live in it for about two years before he got himself killed in a duel.

アレクサンダーハミルトンの家に来た。この家は二回も移動されたことがある。元々はここからちょっと離れた場所にあった、そしてその後上にある教会の隣に移された。何年前保存する為に教会の隣から今の場所にまた移動された。今はセイントニコラス公園の北端にある。この家はハミルトンが具有した唯一の家らしい。でも結局二年間しか住んでいない。建ててから二年後、アーロンバーと決闘して亡くなったから。

これもシティーカレッジの建物だ。

這裡是關於Croton Aqueduct(水道）的建築。現在變成劇場。

This building used to be part of the Croton Aqueduct system.  It's no longer in use for that purpose, so it has been converted into a theater space.

この建物は元々クロートン送水路の施設だった。ニューヨーク市の水道水はけっこう早い時期から遠く離れた場所から確保する様になった。現在はこの建物が劇場に再利用されている。

位於125街以北的（捷運）鐵路。

已經超過了一百年的鐵路拱橋。

A beautiful arch.  It's over 100 years old too.
