New York City: Upper Manhattan / ニューヨーク：マンハッタンの北部 / 紐約：曼哈頓北部

上個月我回家到紐約。這一次的旅行我懶得拍顯示「大城市」這樣的照片。反而我拍很多公園啊，動物啊，這樣的東西。因為我老家在曼哈頓北部，所以公園比較多，有很多機會拍這樣的照片。

I went home to New York for a bit last month.  I didn't really take many photos that give a sense of the big city that it is, but I ended up with a lot of photos of bugs and flowers instead.  I guess it's just the mood I was in.

先月ニューヨークの実家に帰って来た。なんとなく「大都会ニューヨーク」みたいな写真を撮る気はなかったので、撮った写真はほとんど虫とか花とか、そっち系の写真ばかりだ。

今天只有一張看得出來是大城市。在125th Street and Broadway旁邊，Columbia大學正在建新的校區。

One photo in this set that looks appropriately big-city though is this first one.  Columbia University is making a new campus right next to the 125th Street station on Broadway.  Because this station is an elevated one, you can see the construction quite well from the station platform.  I made a mistake.  I took this photo on the viaduct on Riverside Drive, not from the station.  You can actually see the subway in the background.

でもこの一枚目はちょっと都会感がする。実家の近くの地下鉄駅、125th Street and Broadwayでコランビア大学は新しいキャンパスを作っているところだ。リバーサイドドライブという道にある橋からこの写真を撮った。奥に線路が見える。

There were a lot of mushrooms growing at about 120th street in the park.

なぜかキノコがめっちゃ生えていた。

看起來好吃、、、敢不敢採看看？

They look pretty good, but I wouldn't recommend picking strange mushrooms that you found in the park and eating them.

美味しそうだけど、公園で見つけたキノコを家に持って帰って食べる勇気はない。

157th Street捷運站。這一天我去叫座「Jumel Mansion」的公館。現在變成博物館。

Here's a photo from the 157th Street station.  I went to the nearby Jumel Mansion on this day.

在對面有這座燈塔在大樓上。為什麼？（對了，對面是布朗克斯區。在照片下面有哈萊姆河，但在這張裡看不到。）

A view across the Harlem River to the Bronx.  The building in the center is for some reason crowned by a lighthouse.

向こうにザブロンクスがある。この下にはマンハッタンとザブロンクスを隔離するハーレム川が流れているが、この写真では見えない。向こうの建物はなぜか灯台が上に乗っている。

捷運建設完了之前曼哈頓北部是鄉下的地方。現在曼哈頓島都是在紐約市區裡，但是設備這個標石當時，紐約市只是曼哈頓島南部而已。字寫「離紐約十一英里」。

This marker says "11 Miles to New York" despite the fact that it is in the city.  This is because the city used to be only on the southern tip of Manhattan.  It wasn't until they built the elevated train lines, and then the subways, that the city really expanded up to the north of the island.

この石碑に「ニューヨークまで１１マイル」と書いている。今はマンハッタン全島がニューヨーク市の一部になっているが、地下鉄などができた以前、ニューヨーク市はマンハッタン島の南部だけだった。想像しがたいが、当時はマンハッタン島の北部はまだ森と農場のある田舎だった。

This building is really new.  I actually kind of like it, even though it doesn't much fit in with much of the surrounding architecture.

這邊（曼哈頓，Hamilton Heights/Washington Heights）有很多好看的建物。

The Hamilton Heights/Washington Heights area has a lot of neat old buildings actually.

この辺はワシントンハイツまたはハミルトンハイツとされている。綺麗な建物たくさんある。

這是一種樹的樹皮。它是乾乾脆脆的。小時候用這個來玩玩。看到它就讓我懷古。

I remember playing with the bark of this tree when I was a kid.  It's very crunchy and satisfying to break apart in your hands.  I don't know what kind of tree it is that has this bark, but they seem to be pretty common in the city's green areas.

この樹皮を見て懐かしいと思った。なんの木か分からないが、ニューヨークには珍しくない。樹皮がとても乾燥して、カリカリするので、手に取って崩すのが面白い。子供の時よくそうやった。

鳥が好きな人ならオーデゥボンのことは知っているだろう。

好像哈比人房子的墓穴。

This is, of course, a grave, but it would make a nice Hobbit House too.

お墓だけど、なかなかホビットの家に似ているなぁと思った。
