Nakijin/今帰仁/今歸仁

And so we head south and then west from Ogimi to the village of Nakijin.  In the village is a castle by the same name.  No, not just a castle, but one of the major castles in Okinawa's history, and the former seat of the Hokuzan Kingdom.  It's a really impressive castle.  It's located on top of  hill, and has a beautiful view of the surrounding area.  Of course, the castle's position on a hill was not chosen for its aesthetic values alone.  The castle was known as a formidable fort, and it was the site of a major battle during the period when Sho Hashi was uniting Okinawa into one kingdom.  After he defeated the king of Hokuzan and took over the castle, he and other kings after him appointed trusted family members to be "Lords of Nakijin" in order to consolidate control over this far-removed, hilly, and sparsely-populated part of Okinawa.

The castle then was the site of another major battle when the Satsuma forces invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609.  This was the castle's last stand, and it lay mostly in ruins after that.  The castle is now registered as a world heritage site, so in recent years they've been fixing it up a bunch, and every time I visit it it looks different from the time before.

大宜味村を出て、西の本部半島に向かって行く。そして、その半島の北部、今帰仁村にある今帰仁城に向かって行く。今帰仁城は沖縄でも指折りの城の一つだ。三山時代には北山王国の主都でもあった。丘の上のこの城は北部の経済中心でもあったが、無敵の砦としても知られていた。実際に無敵だというわけじゃないから、三つの三山王国を統一して琉球王国を立てた尚巴志によって敗れた。その後首里から遠く離れた北部の支配を強化するために、尚巴志とその後の琉球国王は今帰仁に信頼出来る家族を北山監守として派遣していた。

１６０９年になったら、薩摩藩軍は北部から沖縄を侵入して、最初に倒したのは今帰仁城だった。以降、城が廃墟された。今は世界遺産とされているので、徐々に整備されている。毎回私が見に行ったら、様子が変わっている。

我離開大宜味村往西去今歸仁村。在今歸仁村有一座古堡，也叫做「今歸仁」。在沖繩的「三山時代」，這裡是北部的「北山王國」的中心。大家都認為這座堡壘是所向無敵的。其實把沖繩統一了，建立琉球王國的教名尚巴志打敗了北山王，所以並不是無敵的。後來琉球王國的國王都派家人去當「北山監守」確定北部的統治。

1609年日本的薩摩藩軍隊進沖繩來，首先打了今歸仁堡。後來都被廢棄了。但是現在因為變成一個世界遺產了，所以越來越改建了。

These are (I'm pretty sure) cherry trees, and in January you can see them bloom.  Okinawa has the earliest blooming season of all of Japan.

たしか、これらは桜だと思う。今帰仁の桜が有名だ。沖縄は割と咲くのが早いので、一月辺りに咲くらしい。

The stairs above were built fairly recently.  The original stairs can be seen below.  (From above, looking down, though it's a little hard to tell.)

Another sacred space called "Soitsugi".  You can see how there is kind of a wall around it.

中に入って裏の方に行ってみたら、丘の上に立っているということがよく分かって来る。

I'm not sure what they recommend here (the Japanese is no clearer) but seeing as there is a steep cliff just beyond this sign, perhaps this is the castle's designated suicide spot.

曖昧な日本語の看板だ。何がオススメか全然分からないが、この先は崖になっているので、飛び込み自殺を勧めているかもしれない。

Tenchiji Amachiji, another sacred spot.

「てんちじあまちじ」という聖地。

叫做「ㄊㄝㄣㄑㄧㄐㄧ，ㄚㄇㄚㄑㄧㄐㄧ」的聖地。（阿媽騏驥？）

Here we are at the castle's highest point.  There were probably lots of buildings up here in the past.

これはお城の頂点だ。昔は建物がいっぱいあったはずだ。

最高的地方。現在什麼建築都沒了，但是以前北山的國王應該住在這裡。

I realized after I took the photo, but one of the people in the little building below is, I think, in the middle of praying.

下の写真を撮ってから、中に入っているはお祈りをしているかもしれないと気付いた。沖縄のグスク内の聖地は現在も使用されている場所が多い。

At the rear of the castle is another open area down below.

You can see why this was considered a formidable castle.

You might be able to guess from how bright the photos are, but it was insanely hot and sunny this day, so at this point I had had quite enough of walking around.

Here is the original main staircase that I mentioned above.  It's hard walking, but you can use it when going in and out of the castle.
