Eternal Spring: Part One /

In my last post, I explained how I went to Sandymun (三地門).  After leaving Sandymun, I next headed down--way down--to Hungchwun (恆春).  Hungchwun is the southernmost town in Pingdung(屏東), and in fact in all of the island of Formosa.  It's name means "eternal spring", hence the post title.

If you look at a map you'll see what I mean, but Hungchwun is way down there.  The long, skinny peninsula that it is just about at the end of is actually fairly mountainous aside from a thin strip along the coast, and a wider flat area precisely where Hungchwun is located.  What this means is that this peninsula has never been heavily populated.  Once you start heading down the peninsula, you'll hit a long section with very little human presence, and that continues for at least 40 minutes or so before you get to the flat area where Hungchwun is located.

Hungchwun is a very popular tourist town because of its proximity to Kunding (墾丁) national park on the absolute southern tip of the island.  Additionally, Hungchwun itself also has a nice collection of well-preserved city walls and gates that are cool to look at if you are into that sort of thing.

I am very much into that sort of thing.

I stayed at a place called "South Gate Guesthouse".  It's a former doctor's clinic that has been renovated, but where they've purposefully left in place a lot of the building's old decor.  It was a neat place to stay.

It looks like this if you have been hit on the head shortly before arriving.

And here is the hostel's namesake.  This old city gate, the South Gate, is right nearby.  Like many former city gates in Taiwan, it has been surrounded by a traffic circle.

There was a freight train line going through South Gate during the Japanese era, so when I saw this building, I wondered if it wasn't a former railway building.  (If you look at the photos above, you can see that this building is located at the other end of a straight road from South Gate.)  I asked someone, and they said that it was a former bus station (in fact busses still stop here even now) but I still wonder if it wasn't a train station first, and only later converted into a bus station after the train tracks were ripped up.  It looks like a Japanese-era train station is the thing.  As you can see, it's now filled with stores.
