Tainan Cafes and Old Gates/

It seems like recently all I've been writing about on this blog is stuff about far-off places like Japan and Green Island.  It's time to get back to basics!  This is a Tainan blog; let's explore Tainan!

A couple weeks back I want to a cafe called "MuHongDou" in the area where Jinhua Road and Minzu Road meet up.  The store specializes in ice with sweet azuki beans and sweet potatoes and stuff.  (When I say ice, I don't mean plain old ice, nor am I really talking about ice cream; I mean something like the helados that you can get from the sidewalk carts in the summer in NYC.)  The store is in an old building that they've fixed up a bit, so the atmosphere is nice too.

After finishing our food, we decided to walk around the neighborhood.

As is typical in historical Tainan, you can't walk more than two minutes without encountering some sort of temple or related structure.

And here we are at "DueiYueMun".  This is one of Tainan's old gates from the Qing era when the city had walls.  In the Japanese era, most walls and gates were destroyed for the sake of widening roads and modernizing the city, but a handful of them survived.

Oh god, what happened!?

One interesting thing about this gate is that unlike some of the others, it's right over a road.  Big East Gate is in the middle of a rotary, Big South Gate is in a park, and Small West Gate is on the Cheng Kung University campus.  They're all a little removed from roads where people pass by on their vehicles in large numbers.  This gate however is not only sitting over a road, but on either side it is in direct contact with people's houses.  It's not separated from people's daily lives in any way.

I really liked this hand-carved wood sign too.

The weird building on the right appears to be some sort of factory, but I have no idea what it is.  There are an awful lot of electric lines though, so I wondered if maybe it was related to electricity production or transmission in some way.

The pronunciation of the words "cat" and "gate" sound like the English word "moment" a bit, so while the direct translation of the name is "Cafe Cat Gate", it's actually a pun, and the English is rendered as "Cafe Moment".

I wonder if this building isn't a Japanese era one.  It somehow gave me that vibe.

Taoist temples often have small figures holding up the roof like this, but I thought this one was interesting because his face looks so European.

I thought the building below looked cool, but there was no way to get close to it without climbing gates and breaking laws.
