Green Island from Above/

This was my favorite part of the trip to Green Island.  Aside from the loop road that goes around the island, the only other road they put on the tourist maps (and realistically, one of the only other roads on the island) is this road that climbs up the middle of the island and then abruptly ends in the mountains in the middle of nowhere.  The reason it is on the maps is because you can use this road to get to some of the island's taller mountains.

Green Island may be small, but as an island of volcanic origin, it's got some decently tall mountains.  (The tallest is around 920 feet.)  Going up to the mountains and walking around gives you the opportunity to see the island from above, see weird lizards and bugs, and to get away from the crowds.  We encountered very few other people while up here.

Here's a grave.  Graves in Taiwan are often put up on hillsides.

At the end of the vehicular road were signs warning of a military base.  From what I understand, you can't actually go up to the highest peak on the island because the military uses it.  The highest peak that's open to the public is the second highest on the island.

I thought these were tomatoes, but I was told afterwards that they are a different type of plant.  I think they might be Solanum Pseudocapsicum.

On of the island's hiking trails, the "Cross Mountain Trail".

The entrance to two other hiking trails.  One of them is a road that was actually used by the islanders before the paved road around the island was constructed.  The other is a trail that goes up to the top of the island's second highest peak, Amei Hill.

I loved walking this trail because it was filled with bugs and lizards.

This was originally a really out-of-focus photo of a butterfly.  I changed the contrast a bit and now it's art.
The trail is like this the whole way.  It's very well-maintained and an easy walk.  (It's also only about 2/3 of a mile.)

The were lots of ferns on the hill.

You would not believe how big this spider was.  It was BIG.

Here we are at the top!

Look at this lizards just chilling here!

I was really hoping that it would lunge for the fly there to the side and I could get a photo of the cruelty of nature, but no such luck.

And here we are back on the scooter heading down to sea level.  (Praying that the brakes won't give out the whole while.)
