Minnan House/閩南の民家/閩南的民家

A couple weekends ago, I had the chance to go out to the eastern, more rural area of Tainan.  One of the things I saw out there was this old, Minnan-style house.  While Minnan houses are not rare in Taiwan by any means, this one is particularly well preserved.  The house is the Lin family house, and it's in the Meiling area.

二週間前、台南市の東部に行くチャンスがあった。以前は「台南県」だったが、現在は「県」がなくなって、全てが「市」になっている。でもやっぱり田舎だから、車がなければ移動が不便だ。一カ所行った場所は伝統的な閩南の民家だった。「林」という家族の家で、梅嶺という地域にある。

兩個禮拜前我去臺南的東部（梅嶺）。在那裡我看幾棟民家。那裡的人教我這些房子是18世紀建的！

Minnan houses usually have lots of tilework all over.

閩南の民家は磁器が本当に多い。模様も豊富で、面白いタイルを探すのも民家を訪ねる魅力点の一つだ。

我真的喜歡閩南民家的瓷磚。有很多模樣，很漂亮！

These tiles were imbedded in the ground in front of the main entrance.  The objects depicted are all traditional weapons.

昔の武器が彫られているタイルだ。玄関の地面にあった。

在門口地面有這些瓦片。它們的模樣是以前的武器。

The compound has a large courtyard, surrounded by smaller houses, with the largest house at the other end of the courtyard from the main entrance.  Traditionally, a compound like this would have been lived in by a large, extended family.

ここの民家は一軒家じゃなくて、広場の周りに何軒もあった。昔は拡大家族がここに集まって住んでいた。

這裡有廣場，在廣場周邊有幾棟房子。以前，住在中心最大的房子是家長，分家住在旁邊的房子。

As is usual, the roof is covered with gods and dragons.

The beams under the roof here are tiger-stripe patterned.

I want to know the story behind this tile.  Why is the one guy protecting the deer?

Pretty cool, huh?  This house is crazy old too.  It was built in the 1700's, which is about as ancient as anything in Taiwan ever gets since Dutch and Chinese settlers started arriving in large numbers and putting up brick/stone buildings that would last for a long time only starting in the 1600's.

この民家は１８世紀に建てられたと教えて貰った。台湾は１７世紀になってからオランダ人と中国人が住み着いて、石や煉瓦で建物を建て始めたので、台湾のもっとも古い建物でもだいたい１７、１８世紀の物になるのだ。台湾からすれば、１８世紀の民家って大した古いものだ。
