Tie Non: Hsinchu / 新竹 / 新竹

今天我要po新竹旅行的照片。我不太期待新竹，但是結果我覺得是個很有趣的城市。因為規模不寬大所以可以用走路觀光很多古蹟，老房，這樣的東西。

Here are some photos from a trip to Hsinchu. (Despite the funky Wade-Giles spelling, it's pronounced something like "Shinjew".) I had never given much thought to visiting Hsinchu, but it turned out to be a great trip. The city center is small and walkable enough that you can see quite a lot of historic buildings just by walking around for a day.

以前は新竹に対してあまり魅力感じなかった。でも行ってみれば意外と面白かった。新竹の中心地は広くないから散歩して古い建物を見るには適している。

新竹的東門。當然在圓環裡。

Here's the East Gate. As is usual with old city gates in Taiwan, it's been since surrounded by a traffic circle.

東門。台湾によくあるパターンだが、ロータリーに囲まれている。

新竹站是台灣老火車站當中是較厲害的一座。

Hsinchu Station is one of the more impressive-looking train stations in Taiwan. It's dates back to the Japanese period.

新竹駅は日本時代にできた駅舎。日本時代駅舎の中にはかなりすごい方だ。

說到老房子，我覺得這一棟是一個很好「不要做」的例子。建築看起來是蠻老的，有可能是漂亮的。但是因為商店把看板放在外牆所以建築看不到。

Now here's a good example of what not to do with your old building. This building looks like it may have been rather handsome in the past, but it's so covered with ugly signage now that it's hard to tell what it looks like at all.

古い建物の扱い方、悪い例：この建物は多分まあまあ面白いものだったと思うが、醜いバーケンストックの看板が掛けられて建物の様子が見えなくなった。

一看到這棟看起來只是一般的房子而已。但是一樓是市場的入口！

It looks like a normal, three story building, but this is the entrance to a market that stretches back for a block or so. You can see the scooter coming out here.

真ん中の白い建物の一階は建物への玄関じゃなくて、奥にある市場への入り口だ。

駐輪場、台湾スタイル

新竹都城隍廟的裡面。都是小吃店。

I went to a market that surrounds a temple. (Hsinchu Doo Chung Hwong Meow / 新竹都城隍廟). The inside is all craziness like this.

新竹都城隍廟という廟に行った。周りは全部市場になっている。中はこう：

外面也是被小吃店環繞的！

外はこう：

新竹的源泉。從這裡城市流出來了。

The "first street" of Hsinchu, where the city started.

この道は新竹の第１本の道とされている。

It's nothing special aside from the sign.

這些老房子都是清朝統治時代的。但有趣的是裡面的商店大部分是電視遊戲商店！

I thought this area was interesting. There is this row of old, brick buildings, but contrasting with the age of the buildings is the fact that most of the stores in them now are video game stores.

ここに古い建物がたくさん集まっているが、面白い事に、中の店はほとんどテレビゲーム屋さんばかり。

溫故知新

新竹州廳到了。現在是新竹市政府使用的，可是原是本在日本統治下建立的。沒有關下，想進去觀光就可以！

Here's the Hsinchu City government building. It was finished in 1927, and at the time it was the building for the government of 新竹州 "Shinchiku Shu" (Japanese reading), a now defunct local government. The building is quite impressive, and what's more, it's open to the public. You can just walk in and wander around! I was there on a weekend, so there was almost no one even in the building.

新竹の市役所。元々日本時代に新竹州庁として建てられた。中は開放されている。

對面有日本時代的消防局。

There's this old fire station across the way, but I'll show you more of that next post.

新竹市役所の向こうにあった昔からあった消防署。次回のポストで紹介する。

以前我有住過的美國和日本兩個有蠻嚴格的「政教分離」應該不會有這樣的科。我認為台灣有宗教自由可是可能沒有政教分離吧？

As far as I know, while Taiwan does have religious freedom, there is no separation of church and state.

台湾は法律上で宗教自由になっているが、日本と違って無宗教の政府ではないと思う。

新竹客家和原住民很多。

Hsinchu has a decently large aboriginal population (Atayal and Saisiyat) and a lot of Hakka as well.

新竹に客家と先住民が多い。

對面有另外一個紅磚建築。

Across the street from the city government building is another red-brick, Japanese-era government building.

向こうに以前の新竹市役所がある。

這也是日本政府建的。當時是新竹市政府的「市役所」。現在是美術館。

Originally this was built in 1920 as the Shinchiku City Government building. Currently, it is used as an art museum.

1920年建立。今は美術館になっている。
