Just a small collection of photos of things that I thought were mildly interesting for whatever reason.

I love the name of this laundromat.  "Jaunty"

「亮麗」は英語の「jaunty」になっている。Jauntyは「陽気」とか「のんき」とか、そう言う意味だ。

我喜歡這個洗衣店的英文名字：Jaunty。意思就是「愉快」，「歡快」，這樣子。

An organization that supports official Taiwanese independence.  I'm not sure of the details, but the presence of the Japanese and American flags on their building is related to Taiwan's complicated post-war history.  Basically, no country was ever officially given sovereignty over Taiwan after Japan renounced its sovereignty over Taiwan, nor was it given the chance to set up its own, independent government.  At the same time, practically speaking, the Republic of China assumed control over the island.  Taiwanese official independence supporters use this history as part of their argument for why Taiwan should be officially recognized as an independent state.

台湾の正式的な独立を支援する組織のオフィスだ。日本とアメリカの国旗を揚げているのは台湾の歴史と関係している。戦後、日本は台湾の統治権を放置したが、その統治権は正式的に他の国に譲られていない。しかし、現実的にいうと、中華民国は台湾を支配することになった。しかもその後、中華民国の政府は内戦に負けて、中華人民共和国に追い払われて台湾に逃げたので、事実上では中華民国は台湾といくつか他の島にしか存在していない状態になってしまった。とにかく、国連の決まりに反して、台湾人は他に日本が支配した地域（韓国、パラオなど）と違って、独立するチャンスがずっと受けていないと、こういう組織は主張している。

我對臺灣開始有興趣一個原因是臺灣複雜的政治情況。因為我住的不是臺北，是臺南，所以我常常在外面看到臺灣獨立的活動。

Some sort of structure on the roof of this building.  I've heard that these types of structures are often used as pigeon houses.  Apparently, raising racing pigeons is a thing.

建物の上に建てられた小屋。聞いた話では、こういう小屋はよく鳩小屋として使われている。

Another interesting romanization.  (Well, interesting if you know Chinese.)  華中 has become "waltzoon".  Is it on purpose that the name resembles the casual-sounding phrase "waltz on"?  If so, it's pretty clever.

Just some old buildings that I thought had interesting designs.
デザインがちょっと面白いと思った建物。
有趣的建築。雖然對臺南人來說應該很普遍，到處都有的老房子，但是對我來說是有特徵的。在美國一定看不到的樣子。

Taiwan has two nuclear power plants, and there is a third one planned that's been stalled forever.  Like Japan, Taiwan is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, and a lot of people think that not only should the third one not be built, but the first two should be decommissioned.

台湾には既に原子力の発電所が二つある。一つ計画中のもある。特に福島事件以来、原子力に反対している声が増えて来た。日本と同じく台湾にも地震や津波が珍しくない。
