Cishan/旗山/旗山

This past weekend I visited a small town called "Cishan" (or "Qishan", either way, pronounced "Chee-shaun").  Thanks to recent local government consolidations in Taiwan, the town is now just part of Kaohsiung City.  It's located to the northeast of the central city, which puts it to the southeast of Tainan.  The town's known for its banana crops as well as its old buildings.

日曜日に旗山（チーシャン）という町に行って来た。現在は高雄市の中の一つの区とされているが、市内の中心からけっこう離れている。台南市からも直接にバスで行ける。旗山はバナナと古い建築物が有名だ。

上禮拜天我去旗山。現在算是高雄市的一部分，但是離高雄中心蠻遠。是一個香蕉和老街有名的村落。

Upon arriving, the first building of interest we happened upon was this temple.  I thought the font used above the doorway was pretty cool.  The character on the right is "bird", and it looks like one!

着いたら、最初に出会った建物はこの廟だった。玄関の上の字が綺麗だと思った。

我喜歡在門上這個字的樣子。

Going around the temple, we found ourselves on the main commercial street where all of the old buildings are.
廟の裏側に回って行ったら、中山路という商店街に出てきた。古い建築はここに集中している。
在廟後面是中山路。老街和商店差不多都在這裡。

Like many older buildings in Taiwan, a lot of care was put into the facades.  They have all sorts of interesting designs.

台湾の古い建物はファサードが凄い。ここにこそ力を入れたって感じだ。

這些房子都是日本時代建的。

I liked this Captain America-esque theme.

キャプテンアメリカの盾みたいな模様。

看起來像美國隊長的象徵一樣。

Most of the buildings on this street were built back in the early 20th century, during the Japanese colonial period.

因みに、この建物は皆だいたい日本統治時代に建てられた。

I can't figure what this facade is supposed to read, or even what language it is.  It's vaguely Japanese-ish, but it's not any Japanese that I recognize.

下の写真の文字は日本語っぽいけど、全然意味が分からない。一つのAを移動してみたら、「イザナギけいこ」になる。けいこは普通な女性の名前だけど、イザナギって天地開闢の男の神だ。（女の方は「イザナミ」という。）こういう苗字はかっこういいけど、実際に存在しないだろう。

Almost certainly not an original feature on the building, but I thought this faucet was cute anyway.

きっと後で付け加えた物だと思うが、可愛いと思った。

這個水龍頭很可愛！

A local shrine.  Usually stones like this are placed at intersections of roads.  I've never seen one dressed up and sitting in a park like this before.

日本（特に沖縄）にも見掛ける「石敢當」だ。普通は交差点の突き当たりに置いてある。私は初めてこういう祀られているのを見た。

我有看過很多石敢當，可是我向來都沒看過這樣的石敢當。平常它們在路口上，但是這一個不但不在路口上，也像偶像一樣。

We're not in the temperate climate zone anymore, Toto!

And here we are!  At the Cishan Train Station, another historic building in Cishan.  The trains no longer run here, but the building remains.  We'll look at this next time.

今は電車が通っていないが、これは旗山の駅舎だ。今回もっと詳しく見よう！

這是旗山火車站。現在沒有火車，但是這座車站是日本時代做的，所以還是保存的。
