ドミンゴ城を出た後、直ぐ隣りのオクスフォード大学に行った。中国語の文字が面白いね。「牛津」が「Oxford」に成っている。実は、有名なイギリスに有る大学と、英辞典も同じ漢字を使っている。
淡水に有るオクスフォード大学の名前の由来は明らかにイギリスのオクスフォード大学だ
、、、と思ったけど、実は違う。前回のポストに書いたマッケイはこの大学を作らせた。彼はカナダ人で、カナダのオクスフォード県（郡？カナダのcountyだから、何と言ったらいいかな。）から寄付金を沢山貰ったから、そのカナダに有る地方が名前の由来だ。（でも、勿論、カナダのオクスフォードはイギリスのを名前の由来にしているので、結局全部がそっちに繋がっている。）
因みに現在大学の総合名前がAletheiaに成っている。
Continuing from
last time, I went to Oxford College after leaving Fort Domingo.
Oxford College? Don't you mean Oxford University? And isn't that in England?
It turns out there's an Oxford College in Tamsui. It was started by MacKay, whom I mentioned in the last post. Since he was a Canadian of Scottish descent, I initially assumed that he had named the college after one of the most illustrious institutions of learning in the English speaking world, but actually, it turns out that he received a lot of donations to build the school from Oxford, Canada, so the school is actually named after some county in Canada.
The school's current name is "Aletheia". But because the original name was Oxford, "Oxford" is still plastered all over the place.
MacKay was a Presbyterian minister, and the school is still affiliated with the Presbyterian church. (Like most religiously affiliated schools though, it is not exclusive, and one does not need to be Presbyterian to attend.)

大学のグラウンドを出て、道を歩いたら、こういう景色が有った。流石昔から外国人の手が入った地域、台湾の他の地域と雰囲気が違う。大学以外、この辺に高校などが多い。
Starting with the Spanish, and later the Dutch, MacKay, and others, the Tamsui area, thanks to its position as an important port, has had a lot of influence from the outside world. This road that I walked down after leaving the college looks rather different from most of Taiwan.

これも前回に出た観音山だ。本当に綺麗な姿をしている山だ。

There were almost as many people taking pictures of the kitten as of any of the historic buildings in the area. I felt a little shame, but I still joined them. The cat was really cute!
Here's where we got the boat that goes across the river to Bali. I know, it's incredible, right? In one day I went to both Oxford AND Bali! What an international traveler I am!
「巴里」と言う地名が見えるだろう？川を渡って淡水の向こう側、観音山の麓に有る。別に淡水と大した変わりは無かったけど、船に乗るのは楽しかった。

その後友達とカメラでふざけて夜景の写真を撮った。友達はアーティストだ。流石写真撮るのも上手だ。俺の安いカメラでなかなか面白い写真を撮った。又、俺はこのカメラを３、４年間位持っているのに、俺がまだ知らない機能が有ったと友達が見せて呉れた。あらあら、機械は本当に不能だ。
My friend who was showing me around is an artist, so she was pretty good at using my camera. Better than me, certainly. I didn't even know about a bunch of the functions my camera has until she showed me, and I've had the thing for 3 or 4 years.
After getting back to central Taipei, we went to one of the big, famous night markets, Shulin, I think. The night market's just a bunch of stores, so I didn't think it would make for good photos, but the subways station nearby is pretty cool, huh? It's like it was designed by a Star Trek fan.
樹林という有名な夜市の近くの地下鉄駅だ。台北の中心地に戻ってから、そこに行った。夜市自体の写真は無いけど、、、
そして、最後に大統領（台湾では「総統」と言う言い方にする）の官邸だ。友達によると、別に総統が住んでいる訳じゃない。アメリカのワイトハウスと違う。この建物も日本時代に作られた。（台湾に日本時代からの建物が本当に多く残っている。）出来た当時は台湾総督府だった。建物は東向きに成っている。つまり日の出を見ている。
This is the Presidential Palace. My friend said that it's not actually the president's house. It's just used for official business. Like many government structures in Taiwan, it was built during the Japanese period, when it was the Taiwanese Governor-General's office.
この日は何かのイベントが有った。後で調べてみたら、スワジランドの国王が台湾に訪問していたと分かった。中華民国と正式的な外交が有る国は本当に少ない。スワジランドはその一カ国だ。
We didn't know what was going on at the time, but we saw the door was open and the lights were on, and we saw the cop cars, so we figured something was going on. Afterwards I found out that the King of Swaziland was visiting Taiwan at the time we were in Taipei. Swaziland is one of the few countries with official diplomatic relations with the Republic of China

And that was it for my trip to Taipei. I didn't want to get back to Tainan too late on Sunday, so I basically just woke up (late) and then got on a train on Sunday morning. Pretty fun trip!
とりあえず、終わりだ。またいつか台北に行きたいと思うけど。
